Promoting Learning Through Play

Another day in isolation calls for those of us who have gone slightly stir crazy to come up with new activities to do most days. I put together a few activities we’re enjoying here in the Harrison household.

Color Sort with Magna Tiles – Grab a stack of colored magna tiles. Organize one row by color. Give the rest of the stack to your child and have them sort the tiles by color as they pull from the top of the pile. This is a fun activity for your child to sort by color, say the color aloud, pull apart and then reconnect the tiles.

Spa Day – To make getting ready for the day a bit more fun, we put on our robes and plush headband. Once our sleeves are rolled, we get started – wash our hands, our face, brush our teeth and make bubbles in the sink. Wesleigh is a little mermaid, she absolutely loves the water. We could spend ~30 minutes playing at the sink and so, I let her.

Train Set – Wesleigh really enjoys playing with the choo choo trains. I take the train into NYC for work and my in-laws live in the city so this is a terrific option for symbolic play. In a concrete way, I explain to Wes that neighbors who live next door can walk to our house but when there is a lot of distance, especially with her Grandma, it’s too far to walk and instead, we ride the train. As we play, we reiterate train sounds that she recalls from a book we often read, The Goodnight Train.
