Let’s talk baby essentials. Registry lists can feel overwhelming, and with the amount of information out there, it’s hard to tell what’s truly helpful versus what will end up collecting dust in a corner. Now that I’m nearly 12 weeks into life with our sweet second baby, I wanted to share five things that have earned MVP status the last few months.

These are the items I reach for every single day – multiple times a day – practical, well designed and extremely useful, especially when you’re deep in the newborn trenches.

1. 1. Keekaroo Peanut Changing Pad: I’ve mentioned this before, and I’ll mention it again. The Keekaroo is gold. No covers, no laundry. Just wipe and go. Which, let’s be honest, is a dream if you’re dealing with early morning blow outs. It’s sturdy, and the peanut shape basically cradles the baby in place.

1. 1. Lovevery Play Gym: Yes, this item is a cult favorite, but for good reason. The hype is real. I had this play mat with my daughter (7 years ago) and it’s only gotten better with time. The play mat is truly thoughtfully designed. I love how it grows with baby; from tummy time to batting toys, to exploring colors and textures. All while looking pretty in your living room. It’s not overstimulating and I’ve used it every single day.

1. 1. BabyBjörn Bouncer: This bouncer is my saving grace when I need to take the worlds fastest shower. It’s lightweight, easy to move around the house, and it folds up nice and flat (easily!). Baby boy loves the gentle bounce and I love that no batteries or plug in is required.

1. 1. Hatch Rest Sound Machine + Light + Clock: This little gadget is everything. Another item we had with our daughter, that has since been upgraded for the better. We use the sound machine every night, and the soft light is perfect for middle of the night feedings and diaper changes. Having a soft clock to track those late night feedings is also helpful for this mama.

1. 1. Oilo Studio Drew Glider: This nursery chair checks all the boxes, comfort, function and style. The high back offers amazing support (seriously helpful when running on fractured sleep), not to mention it reclines, glides and swivels. And, let’s talk about the generous scale of this chair. there’s plenty of room when big sister wants to climb up and cuddle too.

These five newborn essentials I use and LOVE and have made the first three months feel a little less chaotic and a lot more manageable. If you’re building your registry or wondering whats truly worth it, I hope this guide helps steer you in the right direction. You truly don’t need THAT much and these few items will definitely get you through the first few months.

Special Shout Outs to two more items I absolutely love, but don’t necessarily use every day.

Doona Car Seat + Stroller: The Doona is a game changer. This item did not exist with our first born, and now, as a suburban mama juggling multiple kiddos, this item is legit. It goes from car seat to stroller in seconds which is beyond helpful when I’m doing drop off with big sis or running errands solo. No dragging around a heavy carseat or having to wake up a sleeping baby makes my life so much easier.

Artipoppe Baby Carrier: Babywearing – but fashionable – the Artipoppe is definitely a stylish and functional piece in my mama must have toolkit. It’s incredibly easy to use, even one-handed, because lets be real, when you’ve got a 3 month old, items that are usable one handed are essential. The fit is supportive for baby and comfortable for mom, making it perfect for a walk with the dog, grocery shopping, or just up and down the stairs in your own home trying to get something – anything – done.

After we got home from the hospital, I quickly realized I was missing a few key items – cue the late night breast feeding panic orders. A handful of must haves arrived quickly (thank you Amazon) to help me take care of myself and my newest little sidekick.

Hydration Support – Breastfeeding has me constantly thirsty, so having cute water glasses nearby keeps me sipping all day. They’re a great reminder to refill and recharge. And let’s be real, if something is out of arm’s reach while I’m nursing, it might as well be on the other side of the house because I cannot get to it.

Wipes Warmer – Our baby boy is not a fan of diaper changes. I thought a warm wipe might make the experience a little more pleasant – for everyone involved. Bonus: the box gives off a soft glow, which makes those middle of the night changes a bit less of a circus (have I mentioned how different changing a baby boys diaper is compared to a girls!)

Belly Band – Postpartum recovery is no joke and with an older child in the mix, that means I’ve been needing the extra support – literally. A good belly band has helped ease the strain on my healing body and allows me to move around much more comfortably.

Daily Log – Keeping track of feeds, diapers and naps is so much easier with a daily log. Sometimes I cant even remember the last time I ate – let alone what time I started feeding baby last. When the days blur together, having it all written down lifts a huge mental load.

Foolproof Swaddles – Swaddling is not a one parent job – and not every parent can get the hang of it. When my husband found these velcro style swaddles, we knew we had to try them. Now even he can wrap baby up perfectly, every time.

Friday Mom Cooling Gel Pads – These have been a breastfeeding lifesaver. Quick cooling hydrogel relief when things get sore, and I can keep going without bracing for every latch.

Each day is bringing a new rhythm, but these few things help me feel a bit more prepared. After all – it’s been many years since we were in the newborn stage! Whether you’re a first time mom or doing it all over again, having the right support makes a difference.

Last year, I began working on breaking away from old patterns and engaging in healthier ones to nurture my physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. Everything from working out consistently to eating right and going to bed at a normal hour. At least more days than not!

I started off the new year by setting aside quality time for workouts a few days each week. A manageable enough number, but not a hard one that I feel guilty about if I miss workout or two. Busy schedules and the constant hustle can get in the way of being consistent, so I am giving myself grace when I need to.

I’ve found the key to consistency is enjoying the workout, so I stick to mostly yoga, barre and of course lots of walking. Starting my morning with a workout I enjoy truly sets a positive tone and fuels my day.

Since we had only half a day at the parks on Sunday, we opted to visit Animal Kingdom. Hakuna Matata! 

We arrived to Animal Kingdom at 1:30pm and our first stop was the It’s Tough to Be a Bug! ride.

Next up, the Dinosaur ride. Would you believe, the ride did stop, and we actually had to be escorted off. A great start.

From there we made our way to Kali River Rapids which was a perfect choice because it allowed us to cool off from the intense heat of the afternoon sun.

Wes and I then walked around Maharajah Jungle Trek while Zach headed off to explore Avatar Flight of Passage. Riders must be 44″ or taller for this one, and Wesleigh is not quite there yet.

We met back up at the Na’vi River Journey which was a very tranquil ride, with illuminated flora and fauna from the Avatar series. Definitely a pretty experience.

By then we were starting to get hungry and ready to rest our feet, so we sat for dinner at Tiffins Restaurant. The food was fine, the service was very good. This was pretty consistent across all dining experiences during our trip; the service was friendly and eager, and the food was as you would expect it to be when catering to the masses. I will point out, the iced tea here was delicious. Zach and I each had about 3 refills!

Our last stop at Animal Kingdom was Kilimanjaro Safaris, an 18 minute guided tour through the Harambe Wildlife Reserve. We were able to see lions, giraffes, elephants as well as hippos and more.

Then, we decided to keep the Disney World party going and made our way to Epcot to squeeze in two more rides (Soarin and Ratatouille) and watch the fireworks.

Five back to school essential items to ensure your preschooler is ready for their first day of school.

Whether or not you’re emotionally ready for your children’s first day of school, it’s around the corner so ensure they’re ready with everything they need to have the best first day.

Five simple tips to help transition your toddler from a crib to a big kid bed

We have been talking with Wesleigh about her big girl bed for quite some time now. She is nearly 3 years old and although she’s tried to climb out of her crib only once, it became evident she was ready and eager for her big kid bed.

Though Wesleigh was ready for the major milestone, as her mama, I was not. Like most parents, my brain immediately jumped to all the ‘what ifs’ that could happen.  To help ease my anxiety and best prepare myself, I read articles and surveyed some friends for their top tips to ensure a smooth and positive transition from crib to toddler bed.

The timing is different for every child. But, most little ones typically make the switch any time between 18 months and 3.5 years old. If your babe is expressing he’s ready for a toddler bed or boldly climbing out of his crib, it’s probably time.

Five simple tips to help transition your toddler

Time It Accordingly

Don’t rush it! Unless absolutely necessary, keep your sweet babe in the crib. Unless there’s a safety issue with your little one trying to escape, you will both be happier in the crib. We kept our son in his crib until he was nearly four and it was glorious. Once we finally did transition him, everyone was ready, and he understood the expectations and responsibilities of a big boy bed. – Allison, Purple Mountain Mama

Talk to your child beforehand and set a certain date when the transition will happen. For example: “In two weeks is your birthday and you will turn 2. You are a big boy now and will sleep in your new bed from then on”. That has helped my toddler enormously and he was excited to start sleeping in his new “big kid bed”. – Tabea, My Mommy Heart

Make the switch when there are no other major changes going on in your child’s life. For instance, are you expecting another baby? Are you potty training?

Prepping for a big change in your toddler’s life can seem so daunting, as we all know kids thrive on routines. For us, NYC living meant our 2.5 year old would eventually be sharing a room with baby number two. Since we didn’t want to throw too much change at her at once, we converted her crib to a toddler bed before introducing the baby into her room. While she still seemed fine in her crib, and wasn’t trying to climb out or anything, we wanted to give the transition the attention it deserved which would have been hard with a sleeping baby in the room.

She independently enjoyed her new space to hang during the day and we let her put herself to bed at night, which she found so fun and empowering; all while not having to worry about whispering around her sister and doing it all in the dark just yet. Now, a year and a half later, she has never left her bed outside of wake times, and she loves sharing with her little sis! – Ashley, Mom Uptown

I suggest you transition to a big kid bed when you and your child are both ready. There are some who give a particular age, but every child is different. When you both are ready, prepare together. Let your child pick out new blankets and sheets, or anything else. Do as much as you can to talk about it beforehand and build excitement for your child. Consider The Bed

Before ditching the crib, consider what type of bed you’ll be moving your babe into. Are you converting your crib to a toddler bed or getting a new bed?

Go straight to a proper single bed rather than a big kid bed. Apart from getting long term use, it is great to be able to lie in bed with your child to give them cuddles and settle them. – Carly, My Green Toddler

Evaluate Childproofing

Reevaluate the safety of your house. What rooms can your child access if they get out of bed at night? Are there bookshelves and stairs to consider? Make sure you still have safety gates at your stairs and latches on dresser drawers. You could also think about a monitor or attach bells to the door to alert you should your child leave their room.

When switching your child from a crib to a toddler bed, you should expect that they might fall out and plan accordingly. Shop for a bed that is low to the ground and has side rails attached. We purchased a car bed for our son which has worked great over the last few years. The “windows” keep him from falling out even though he moves around a lot. I love that we were able to use it with his crib mattress when he was small and later transition to a twin mattress when he got bigger. Alice, Mommy to Mom

Let Them Help With The Move

Have your kiddo help build the bed! I believe this was the #1 thing that helped provide a smooth transition for us. We spent an afternoon putting it together and having him assist by holding the boards and using the screwdriver. He was so proud and was talking about it for weeks. Make sure to involve your toddler when choosing the bed, bed sheets, comforter, pillow, placement of bed in room. If they are excited easier transition! – Regina, Mommy Four Life

For our independent toddler, the best thing we did was get her deeply involved in the “decision” of moving to the big kid bed. We had her pick out new sheets, pillows, and even what tools we would need to assemble her new bed. Establish A Routine and Stick to it

The transition may not be seamless. Since your child now has the freedom to get in and out of bed on their own, it may take a few nights to adjust. After the first week Wesleigh slept in her converted crib, she woke up two out of seven nights and greeted me by my bedside.

Every time your child gets out the bed and leaves the room you quietly and calmly put her back in her bed, no conversation just “goodnight love you “. No matter how many times it takes, he or she will know if they get up, they will be put back to bed. After one night of doing this she goes to bed every night no problems! – Amanda, The Mama Life
