The pandemic has taken its toll on each of us, in many different ways, and now more than ever, it’s important to give back, especially during the holidays to those who need extra support and love.

Here are five acts of kindness your family can do together to support local communities and those in need during the 2020 holiday season.

1. Donate to Local Organizations

Spend a rainy day going through closets and clearing out gently used, unworn clothing or other products such as baby items, toys and books. Donate them to your local shelter. If you’re here in lower Fairfield County, CT consider:

• DOMUS, Stamford – Domus builds loving relationships with young people facing adversity, empowering them to pursue their path to self-sufficiency.

• Family & Children’s Aid, Danbury – Family & Children’s Aid (FCA) is a child-focused 501©(3) not-for-profit organization offering high quality, innovative mental health care for children and their families.

• Person-to-Person, Darien – Person-to-Person provides individuals and families with assistance for basic needs to overcome daily challenges and access to resources to improve their lives.

• Mothers for Others, Greenwich – Mothers for Others supports the well-being of underserved families by providing diapers and baby equipment for children from birth to 3 years old.

• Malta House, Norwalk – Malta House is the only home for pregnant women above the age of 18 in Fairfield County, and one of a limited number of programs for young homeless mothers and their babies.

2. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital

Send a printable or e-holiday card created by a St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital’s patient or send online holiday messages to the children of St. Jude.

3. USPS Operation Santa

Read letters from Santa’s mailroom and adopt a letter from an individual or family, that resonates with you. Find the perfect gift, anonymously wrap the package and bring it to a participating Post Office by December 19^th.

4. Corporate Social Responsibility

Consider purchasing your holiday gifts from brands that give back. It’s incredible how many companies are now founded on the principles of social and environmental responsibility, making consumers want to support them. A few brands doing corporate social responsibility successfully you should recognize, celebrate and consider supporting are:

5. Animal Advocacy

If there is anything to know about me, know that I really love my dog, who I refer to as a people. And all dogs, so really, all people. If you’re like me and want to give back to our four-legged best friends, consider donating food and supplies to local organizations, or adopting/fostering if you are able to. Every fur-baby deserves a loving home.

• OPIN, Riverside – OPIN was co-founded by shelter volunteers and is an all-volunteer registered 501(c)(3) non-profit. Our mission is to promote adoption of homeless animals, and to provide assistance to pets in need through medical treatment, training, and education.

We have not taken photos yet, but I have started building Wesleigh’s winter wardrobe. She has grown so much recently and was in need of a few new items. Just in time for the holidays.

We will be hosting the holidays this year. Although we are not getting gussied up, we won’t be in our day to day athleisure wear either.

When shopping for Wesleigh, one of my go-to brands is Janie & Jack. They have the cutest pieces year-round but really step it up for the holidays.

Earlier in the season, I snagged a few special items and pulled together a few looks that will be perfect options for the upcoming festivities – even if they are shared via Zoom.

I however, will be recycling some existing pieces. Since we have not gone anywhere special this year, I’m excited to wear some items that have not been worn in a long time.

I’m a huge fan of knits and will most likely be donning this Veronica Beard embellished sweater (sold out but available on sale here and here) or this dreamy pearl cardigan with a pair of faux leather leggings or stretchy jeans, a strategic decision to wear during a big meal.

For as long as I can remember, my mother set the table for all events at least two weeks in advance. As a child, I never understood why. As an adult, and, the parent of a toddler, it’s amazing how quickly the holidays arrive. I’m a planner by nature, I have inherited the tradition of preparing weeks in advance, just like my mother did.

With Covid cases rising and plans feeling uncertain, I will be setting a proper table for Zach, Wesleigh and myself. We will be getting gussied up. Perhaps not in dresses, but in proper attire as opposed to our typical casual wear.

I’ll be setting the table with some of my most loved Lenox pieces including their Contempo Luxe and Colebrook place settings. Their pieces are dishwasher safe, perfect for casual everyday meals or when set carefully for a formal setting which in my house, means they work overtime.

This holiday season, I’m participating in a wonderful campaign where I’m joining fellow designers, Kendall Wilkinson and Sallie Lord of Greyhunt Interiors on Instagram through #ShowMeYourTable and #Friendsgiving2020 to showcase my holiday table setting with Lenox.

Through a tally of posts with these tags, Kendall and Sallie will be donating to Feeding America to help as many families as we can to have hot meals in time for Thanksgiving. 

I insist we maintain the magic moments that come with the holiday season, especially for our little ones. It’s been a hard year for many, but I believe it’s imperative we show our love, count our blessings and share all the things we have to be thankful for.

So pull out your fine china, set a table, create a cheerful centerpiece, make some yummy cocktails and reflect on the last year. There is always something to give gratitude towards.

The holidays have become increasingly special to us. Celebrating with family and creating new traditions with Wesleigh is so enjoyable, not just for me and Zach but also for our parents who have the pleasure of seeing first hand Wes experiencing these traditions for the first time.

Now that we’re maintaining physical distance and staying home, we joined our family for Passover Seder over Zoom and will be continuing this new FaceTime tradition for Wesleigh’s first Easter Egg Hunt. Although it’s disappointing we won’t be together with our extended family for these holidays, we’re grateful everyone is healthy and available to FaceTime often.

Wesleigh turns two later this month so we opted to keep her Easter basket semi-practical, filling it with a handful of goodies she’ll be able to use long after the holiday is over.
